Description
Kokedama, which literally translates to "moss ball," is a popular Japanese method of presenting houseplants. There is a centuries-old custom of displaying the root ball of a bonsai specimen on a plate to draw attention to the beauty of the plant's understory. In time, moss would grow on the bare roots, making for a more impressive presentation.
The original bonsai plant material of trees and shrubs has been mostly replaced in modern times by houseplants, and kokedama have taken on a more spherical form as a result. Kokedama's recent surge in popularity in NYC may be attributed, in part, to the fact that they can be hung up instead of taking up precious table or shelf real estate.
