About the Author

"Born in December 1821 in Rouen, France, Gustave Flaubert was the second son of Anne Justine Caroline and Achille-Clé ophas Flaubert.
Flaubert began his literary career at a very young age. His first published work appeared in a review in 1837. November, a novella, completed in 1842, was his first finished work. Flaubert began working on Madame Bovary in 1850. This story of a bored, unhappy bourgeois wife, Emma Bovary, who indulges in adultery when consumed by her passionate desires and romantic fantasies, was considered scandalous. Flaubert was prosecuted for immorality. In 1857, when it appeared in book form, it was warmly received. Salammbô , his next novel, was completed in 1862. Flaubert took seven years to write his next book, Sentimental Education, which was his last complete novel.
Flaubert died in 1880, aged fifty-eight, after suffering from a cerebral haemorrhage and was buried in the family vault in the cemetery of Rouen."
