About the Author


Major Johno Breeze is an Army Maxillofacial surgeon based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. He is the editor of the Journal of the Royal Army Medical Corps, the UK's military medical journal and has deployed to Bosnia and Afghanistan. His research interests centre around the optimisation of body armour and the development of new methods of personal protection against ballistic threats. Surg Lt Cdr Jowan Penn-Barwell is an Royal Navy Orthopaedic Trauma surgeon with a research interest in limb reconstruction, infection and survival patterns. His clinical interests are in the management of ballistic injuries, stemming from his operational tours of Afghanistan with the Royal Marines. Major Damian Keene is an Army Anaesthesist and prehospital emergency medicine physician. He has been appointed as a lecturer in defence anaesthesia and has deployed to Afghanistan. His clinical and research interests are in the prehospital management of the trauma patient and on going damage control resuscitation. Major Jeyasankar Jeyanathan is an Army Anaesthetist and Intensivist and has been appointed as a lecturer in defence anaesthesia. His interests include Disaster relief Medicine and delivery of acute care in the resource limited environment. He has a deep investment in Medical Education and Simulation in both Military specific training through to Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical training. Wg Cdr David O'Reilly is a consultant hepatobiliary and general surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. He was part of the Department of Health team that introduced regionalised trauma care to England and has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. His research interests include prehospital blood transfusion, the effects of blast on coagulation and quality improvement in trauma care. Colonel Peter Mahoney CBE is is an Army Anaesthetist and Intensivist and is the UK military's first Defence Professor in Anaesthesia and Critical Care. He has deployed with both the military and NGOs undertaking anaesthesia and prehospital care roles. His research interests centre around resuscitation for the ballistic casualty.
